“Ume” are often mistaken for plums. These two fruits have very different characteristics.
Ume (prunus mume) are often mistaken for plums (Prunus domestica). Even though they both belong to the same genus, they have very different characteristics. While the plum sweetens as it ripens, the ume’s tartness becomes more pronounced. Fully ripened ume contains more citric acid than lemons and limes; when consumed, citric acid has an alkaline effect on the body that has many health benefits.
