FACTS ABOUT UME
UME
are not plums
Ume (Prunus mume) are often mistaken for plums (Prunus domestica). Even though they both belong to the same genus, they have very different characteristics. While the plum sweetens as it ripens, the ume’s tartness becomes more pronounced. Fully ripened ume contains more citric acid than lemons and limes; when consumed, citric acid has an alkaline effect on the body that has many health benefits.
FACTS ABOUT UME
UME
is rich in polyphenols
Polyphenols are found mostly in fruits, vegetables, and spices. Studies show that polyphenols are powerful antioxidants that can be beneficial for health. Both the fruit and skin of the ume contain polyphenols, and the amount of polyphenols increases as the fruit matures.
